Brooke Mullins
In terms of introducing colour within my work, these illustrations from Brooke Mullins are an excellent example. She has managed to maintain the striking effect made by the line and detail, whilst combining it for maximum successfulness with colour. They remind me of the sea and interpretations of coral.

Rachel Russell
Found these beautiful illustrations by Rachel Russell. I suppose I am drawn to these as they display the level of detail and intricacy I strive to achieve in my drawings.

Claire Brewster
I love these pieces by Claire Brewster, her literal use of maps is inspiring and could be an interesting take for me personally within my journeys project. The birds and butterfly appear very delicate and the strategically cut shapes give for interesting shadows and outlines. Maps display thousands of journeys in the form of motorways and direction and relates excellently to my theme of journeys. This has inspired me to experiment with looking at my theme more literally, taking my starting influence Around the World in 80 Days and using book pages as a substrate.

Journeys Project Research Drawings
Observational drawings based upon florals, with the interpretation of my original inspirations of Italian, Egyptian, Indian, Japanese and American pattern, particularly geometric.
Artist inspiration
I discovered the work of Sarah J. Coleman and found it very inspiring in terms of the extensive use of contrast and intricate detail. The maximalist impression is aesthetically a quality I am looking to achieve. Similarly, the work of Susan Turner. The contrast between block shapes and thinner lines is very effective and I the structure and geometry will be particularly influential within this particular project.
Journeys Project: Around the World in 80 Days
Initial drawings from my current ongoing project based around the theme of journeys. My inspiration began with the literary classic 'Around the World in 80 Days' by Jules Verne. Published in 1873, I was keen to follow the 'journey' across Italy, Egypt, India, Japan and America of character Phileas Fogg, but analysing the patterns and designs of each country.
I used my favoured drawing style of simple line, using pens with varying line thicknesses to create contrast.
I initially began experimenting with geometric elements by interpreting traditional Egyptian designs.
A more free flowing interpretation.
